How to Take Care of Your Saree: Storage, Washing and Ironing Tips
A care guide by Chandrikas.com
A saree is an investment — especially silk and designer pieces. With the right care, your favourite sarees can stay beautiful for years, even decades. Here's a simple, fabric-wise guide to washing, storing, and ironing your sarees the right way.
Silk Sarees (Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Tussar)
Washing: Always dry clean. Avoid washing at home, as water and detergent can damage the zari work and cause colour bleeding.
Storing: Wrap in a soft muslin or cotton cloth — never plastic, as it traps moisture and can cause yellowing. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks.
Ironing: Iron on low heat, and always place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric, especially over zari or embroidered areas.
Cotton Sarees
Washing: Hand wash or gentle machine wash in cold water. Wash dark colours separately for the first few washes to prevent colour bleeding.
Storing: Cotton breathes well, so it can be folded and stored in a cupboard, ideally with a cotton cloth cover. Air out occasionally in a shaded area.
Ironing: Iron on medium-high heat while slightly damp for a crisp finish.
Georgette & Chiffon Sarees
Washing: Gentle hand wash in cold water, or dry clean for embellished pieces. Avoid wringing — gently squeeze out excess water instead.
Storing: Hang or fold loosely; avoid tight folding as these fabrics can develop permanent creases.
Ironing: Use low heat, as these fabrics can scorch or melt slightly under high temperatures.
General Storage Tips for All Sarees
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading
- Avoid storing in plastic bags for long periods — use cotton or muslin covers instead
- Add a few neem leaves or silica gel packets to your saree cupboard to prevent moisture and pests
- Refold sarees every 2–3 months along different lines to avoid permanent crease damage
- Never store a saree immediately after wearing without airing it out first
Quick Stain Removal Tips
For minor stains, blot (don't rub) with a clean cloth immediately. For silk sarees, avoid home stain-removal attempts — take them to a professional dry cleaner as soon as possible to avoid the stain setting in.
